Films impact people in multiple ways. These feature presentations are made with the purpose of entertaining, enlightening, and, at times, making people reflect on their beliefs and actions. But, at times, films tend to transport their viewers to a time that has gone by and subsequently either learn about or relive the past with the help of either a true, pseudo-fictional, or entirely fictional narrative. These kinds of works of art are usually known as period films. Such films also tend to serve as time capsules, and perhaps this is the closest thing that the general populace of the world has to time-traveling.

This virtue alone makes period films a genre worth exploring. If you are in the mood to relive some of the most important chapters of history in an entertaining way, this article is for you. Read on to learn more about 5 such period drama films on ZEE5 Global that will take you back in time.

1.   Gadar: Ek Prem Katha

Very few people know that the original 2001 blockbuster film (Gadar Ek Prem Katha) was inspired by the tragic love story of Boota Singh, a real-life ex-soldier of the British Army who served on the Burma frontier under the reigns of Lord Mountbatten during the Second World War. This story was somewhat brought to life by Sunny Deol, then-newcomer Ameesha Patel, and director Anil Sharma, who ended up making a film that also touched upon the philosophy of love knowing no nationalities and the underlying reasons behind the tensions that existed between India and Pakistan. This film also stars Utkarsh Sharma as the son of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s characters in the film, who steps into the shoes of the character once again 22 years later for Gadar 2.

2.   Gadar 2

Gadar 2 is a highly anticipated sequel to the smash-hit 2001 film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The action drama is about to make its way to ZEE5 Global on October 6, 2023. Gadar 2 is a magnanimous period film set in 1971 and touches upon the war-like situation that India and Pakistan were in back in the day. In addition to the above, the film tells a heartwarming and gut-wrenching story about revenge and the bond between a father and son. The film reprises Sunny Deol as Tara Singh, Ameesha Patel as Sakeena, and Utkarsh Sharma as Charanjeet Singh as the lead characters.

3.   The Gandhi Murder

Based on the events leading up to one of the most harrowing chapters in Indian history, The Gandhi Murder is a conspiracy theory-based period drama film that sees multiple intelligence officers attempting to gather information about a plan that is being hatched with the intention of assassinating Mahatma Gandhi. This adrenaline-pumping feature presentation stars the likes of Stephen Lang of Avatar movie fame, the late Om Puri, Vinnie Jones, and Gauhar Khan, amongst others.

4.   Parmanu – The Story Of Pokhran

This critically acclaimed John Abraham and Diana Penty-starrer tells the tale of the first nuclear weapons test that eventually put India on the map and established it as a nuclear superpower. This film stars John Abraham and Diana Penty, whose characters set up a nuclear weaponry-testing base in the remote region of Pokharan in Rajasthan. The main obstacle in this film is the American satellites that have been sent into space to spy on the military activities of India and other countries. Parmanu The Story Of Pokhran film ends on a fairly satisfying note, and the ending itself is something that will make every Indian proud.

5.   Mughal-E-Azam

This film needs no introduction. But just for those who have not seen Mughal-E-Azam, this epic historical drama is based on the life of Badshah Akbar and the star-crossed love story of his son, Salim.
